Replacing missing teeth with an implant-supported restoration
is the most modern and ideal way to restore aesthetics and function.
At the Southgate Dental Centre, we have been carrying out implant
procedures since 1992. Our system of choice is the NobelBiocare
system, the pioneers and leading implant system in the world.

Dental implants caused a revolutionary change
in dentistry. Implants are man-made replacements for tooth
roots that have been lost. They behave exactly like real
roots – even bonding naturally with the jaw bone
by means of ‘osseointegration’. The new ceramic
tooth is then anchored permanently on the top of the implant.
Millions of people all over the world now enjoy NobelBiocare
implants. This simple surgery can transform your confidence
and improve your looks. With Nobel Biocare dental implants,
you no longer have to be embarrassed or worried about your
teeth. In fact, new teeth can transform your self-esteem.
Again and again, we find that a beautiful smile makes a
real difference to people’s lives. People who have
changed from ordinary dentures to Nobel Biocare solutions
describe the experience as immensely satisfying. Why wait
to start smiling? |
What are the benefits of dental implants?
Improve appearance – when you lose an entire tooth, shrinkage
of the jawbone may cause your face to look older. Dental implants
can stop this process.
Eat what you want – Implant-supported replacement teeth
are like natural teeth because they are anchored securely to
your jawbone. This allows you to eat your favourite foods with
comfort and confidence. You can enjoy what everyone else is eating
and not think twice about it.
Maintain healthy adjacent teeth – With traditional practices,
two teeth adjacent to a missing tooth must be ground down to
place a bridge. Dental implants eliminate the need to modify
healthy teeth, resulting in the most conservative and esthetic
restoration.
Replace teeth for life – A false tooth without a root
is only temporary. When a root is missing, bone continues to
shrink and creates a visible defect under a false tooth, requiring
additional dental work. Implants provide long-term solutions.
Most NobelBiocare patients should expect lifelong replacement
for their lost teeth.
Improve self-esteem – Once you experience the benefits
of dental implants, you may also experience renewed confidence.
With your improved self-esteem, you’ll be able to enjoy
life once again.
Who
can have dental implants?
Virtually anyone can have this treatment. The surgery
involved is simple and there are very few medical conditions
which would contraindicate this treatment. If you are healthy
enough to have a tooth extracted, you are probably healthy
enough to receive dental implants. The main limitation
is the amount of available bone.
We are often asked if people who have lost their teeth
through periodontal (gum) disease can have this treatment.
The answer is YES. The ‘diseased’ bone will
heal naturally once the teeth are removed. Furthermore,
the implant is inserted mainly in the jaw bone, which in
the vast majority of cases is healthy and sound. It is
usually recommended to wait for about 6 weeks after the
extraction of a diseased tooth before the insertion of
a jaw implant. |

Dental implant can replace from a single tooth to a whole jaw.
The basic procedure is as follows:
- Pre-op: an examination and radiographs (X-rays) are taken
- Installing the implant/s: A short surgery under local
anaesthetic is carried out to insert the implant/s. At the
time of surgery, a temporary crown or bridge may be fitted,
so that you can function normally almost immediately. The
temporary bridge is usually functional for about 2 months
so that the implants may integrate with the jaw.
- Attaching the final restoration: After a period of 2
months, the permanent porcelain crown or bridge is installed.
- Beautiful result: The new restoration will handle all
the pressure that your natural teeth did. You can now eat
whatever you like.
These 4 steps are the conventional way of treatment with jaw
implants. Nowadays, with the advent of the Teeth-in-1-hour technique,
the same treatment can be carried out in less than one hour.
